Middle School Math Curriculum at Miacademy

The best math curriculum for middle school will prepare students for the rigorous math courses in high school. Math is also essential for success  in science courses. The concepts covered should allow students to apply their math knowledge to the upper-level math classes and the advanced science classes in higher grade levels.

Math isn’t just in the classroom, however — it’s everywhere! Your child will need math in the grocery store and at the gas pump, as well as when they tip their server. The best middle school math curriculum not only teaches math concepts but also teaches the value and importance of real-world applications.

At Miacademy, we build on the foundations of elementary school math to guide students to mathematical concept mastery. Our lessons help students make connections between their studies and their daily lives. From figuring out the best deal on groceries to measuring for home projects, students will use these math skills throughout their lives!

Concepts Covered in Our Middle School Math Curriculum

Miacademy’s math curriculum for middle school covers everything your student needs to know to succeed in high school and beyond. Whether you use our curriculum full time or to supplement your child’s public school education, a strong middle school math curriculum will cover the following:

  • Problem solving with negative numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Geometric concepts and calculations of area, circumference, and volume
  • Algebraic concepts, including variables and order of operations
  • Ratios, graphing, and statistics
  • Factoring
  • Linear equations

Middle School Math Curriculum Instructional Practices

Middle school math includes learning new number facts and concepts and applying their conceptual understanding to new problems. Middle schoolers need to explore a wide array of examples and practice questions to develop their mathematical reasoning skills. After all, the ability to analyze a situation and apply the appropriate skills is just as important as finding the solution!

Our math lessons include step-by-step lesson videos with clear explanations and references. These videos are paired with practice questions and extension opportunities that challenge students to think critically about the underlying concepts. As students apply their learning to new problems and situations, their problem-solving skills improve.

6th Grade Math Curriculum (Level G)

Math: Level G

After mastering foundational math skills, students at this level are typically ready for more advanced math concepts. With a blend of theory and problem solving, Math: Level G readies students for higher level mathematical studies, paving the way to middle school prealgebra. Key topics include:

  • Mental math strategies
  • Operations with fractions and decimals
  • Real-word applications of unit rates and in-depth percentage calculations
  • Geometry, statistics, measurement, and data analysis
  • Factorization, including the principles of least common multiple and greatest common factor
  • Exploration of negative numbers, fostering broader numerical fluency

7th Grade Math Curriculum

Prealgebra 1

This is an exciting time for middle schoolers, as this course will begin the transition to high school-level mathematics. In the first year of prealgebra, students are exposed to more advanced mathematical skills. Students will be introduced to foundations of algebra, such as linear graphical representations and algebraic expressions and equations. Key topics include:

  • Operations with integers
  • Real-world application of percentage calculations
  • Introduction to exponents and application of the order of operations
  • Geometric reasoning with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional figures
  • Introduction to linear graphical representations and slope
  • Introduction to algebraic reasoning, including evaluating expressions, solving one- and two-step equations, and using the distributive property

8th Grade Math Curriculum

Prealgebra 2

In their second year of Prealgebra, students are introduced to topics that will ensure their success in the high school Algebra 1 course. In Prealgebra 2, students will learn important skills and concepts such as factoring expressions, solving equations, linear reasoning, and understanding Euclidean geometry. Key topics include:

  • Introduction to inequalities, including visual representations, solving one-step inequalities, compound inequalities, and real-life applications
  • Factoring expressions
  • Solving two-step equations
  • Introduction to functions, including writing and solving linear equations
  • Foundations of radicals and the Pythagorean theorem

Real-World Math Opportunities in Middle School

Our middle school math curriculum bridges conceptual learning with real-life application through a problem-solving approach. Our learning program also has many real-world math opportunities within our community features.

For example, students earn Gold, our website’s currency, as they complete their work. They can keep track of this Gold and spend it on games or dragon eggs! If a student has 800 coins and gets 100 more coins every day, at least how many days does he need to collect 10,000 coins? Ask one of our Prealgebra students for the answer to that one!

In our Design Studio, students can use their Gold to design a piece to sell in their shop for a profit. Children can run their own business, even reducing overhead cost by buying machines to increase income.

They can also spend Gold to advertise their items in the newspaper or sell ad space on their own newspaper articles. This is many students’ favorite part of our site! Plus, they get to practice their math skills without even knowing it!

Using Our Math Curriculum for Homeschool

Our program is great for middle school students because it takes the pressure out of learning. Math can be stressful, and with high school looming, the idea of “algebra” may feel overwhelming. Miacademy students can work at their own pace with plenty of demonstrations in our video lessons. Seeing math come alive and working at their own speed makes math both exciting and accessible!

Your child can follow our middle school math curriculum all the way through or switch between lessons or grade levels as needed. We design our online math curriculum with quality, inclusion, and accessibility in mind to fit the needs of various families. In addition, our curriculum offers the most customization possible, down to each unit and lesson. If you switch in the middle of the school year or halfway through your old curriculum, your child won’t have to repeat anything and can start learning quickly!

However you use our online homeschool math curriculum, we are ready to support you in your homeschooling journey. If you’re wondering whether Miacademy or MiaPrep would be the best homeschool math curriculum for your family, feel free to reach out to our friendly customer service team!
