5th Grade Math Curriculum

Math for fifth grade students introduces concepts such as operations with decimals, coordinate plane graphs, and basic algebraic thinking. This year, students will spend time deepening their understanding, developing problem-solving strategies, and preparing for  more abstract math in middle school. At Miacademy, our fifth grade math curriculum supports this growth with engaging video lessons, interactive practice, and a personalized learning path that makes math both fun and effective!

Before beginning math in fifth grade, students should have a solid understanding of fourth grade math concepts.

While not required, we suggest students take our fourth grade math course, Math Level E, or an equivalent course before starting fifth grade math.

Your child is most likely ready to tackle fifth grade math if they can:

  1. Confidently add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers
  2. Understand place value and read and compare large numbers and decimals
  3. Demonstrate a basic grasp of fractions and can add or subtract simple ones
  4. Follow and solve math problems that take more than one step
  5. Notice number patterns and show interest in how numbers work
  6. Explain how they got their answer in their own words
  7. Work with decimal numbers (like money) and understand simple graphs

Each video lesson has printable math worksheets with additional activities to extend learning beyond the screen with a hands-on approach!

Fifth grade math standards help students advance their skills with concepts like fractions, decimals, geometry, and measurement. Students will practice using math in real-world scenarios, working with graphs, and using logical steps to tackle multi-step equations, preparing them for sixth grade algebra.

By the end of the year, fifth graders will be able to:

  1. Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place
  2. Use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with fractions, including mixed fractions
  3. Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa
  4. Understand how decimals work and how to round them
  5. Solve word problems using fractions and decimals
  6. Use the correct order of operations when solving math problems
  7. Classify 2D figures based on properties like angles and sides
  8. Convert measurements from one unit to another (like inches to feet)
  9. Understand what volume is and how to find it for box-shaped objects
  10. Plot points and read simple graphs, like line plots with fractions

Standards can vary by state, so be sure to check what’s required where you live.

Our fifth grade math curriculum strongly emphasizes operations with mixed numbers and decimals, as well as conversions between mixed numbers and improper fractions. By exploring the relationship between multiplication and division, students begin working with unknowns — an important step toward developing algebraic thinking.
